SVX90T - Seagull Nebula
May 20, 2026 - Tony Hallas

Tony Hallas caught this sublime shot of the Seagull Nebula (IC 2177) in Canis Major with his
SVX90T. This emission nebula sits approximately 3,650 light-years away from Earth and spans roughly 240 light-years across. The cloud of gas at the top of this nebula fluoresces brightly from the energetic radiation given off by an extremely hot young star within (HD 53367). This type B star is twenty times the mass of our Sun, with prominent hydrogen emission lines in its spectrum.
According to Tony: "Looking around for the last Winter nebulas… the Seagull is further east than most of them. I was able to still get it from my home observatory in Foresthill. This is an RGB + SHO attempt… NB colors were added to the RGB via clipped layers combined in “lighten” mode in PS. Colors were adjusted using adjustments and selective color in PS. A lot of versions of this on AB… this is my bigger and better mess."
