Andromeda - Kevin Rasso

Posted by Stellarvue on 29th Oct 2018

We never tire of seeing images of the Andromeda galaxy, and are happy to share this one with the Stellarvue family. Kevin Rasso submitted this image and shared the way he "owned the night." Here is what Kevin shared.

Imaged from my backyard on 9/22/2018 under a nearly full moon, I am amazed by the detail that can be captured by an amateur! The dust lanes near the central galactic bulge and star forming regions in the outer spiral arms fascinate me, especially when realizing we are looking at another version of our own island universe.

This being my first LRGB image with the SVA130T and SFFR.72 reducer, I was very impressed with the optical performance! No flat frames were used, only BIAS and DARKS for calibration. The Paramount MyT, controlled via TheSkyX LTI running on a Raspberry Pi 3 single board computer, dithered 3 arcseconds between exposures. Amateur Andromeda is comprised of 27 by two minute subs through each filter using a QSI 532ws for a total of 3.6 hours of exposure at 2.09 arcsecs/pixel.
