Product Description

Introducing Stellarvue's largest apochromatic refractor telescope, the SVX180T. This is a 180mm, f-7 apochromatic refractor made with an Ohara S-FPL-55 super-low-dispersion center element. This is a limited run of 50 telescopes. We are taking deposits now. Telescopes are beginning to be shpped to clients. Most of these telescopes will be delivered in 2022, with the remainder being shipped in 2023.

Price: The price for this hand-crafted refractor is only $18,995 with the 3.5" Feather Touch focuser. It may be upgraded to a 3.5" Moonlight NiteCrawler focuser for $2704 additional. We will ship the telescope in its thickly padded, heavy duty Roadie style travel case, double boxed. You may notice on the deposit invoice it reads free shipping but refers only to the deposit, our discount UPS or Fed Ex rate will be charged to ship the telescope when finished.

Optics: These SVX series optics are rated at .99 Strehl with excellent optical correction of aberrations commonly seen in mass-produced optics. By bringing our optical figuring in-house, we reduced spherical error, astigmatism, coma and trefoil by a factor of five. To attain this level of consistent optical accuracy we go beyond machine polishing. Our experienced opticians use specially-made tools to hand-figure objectives here in our optical shop in Auburn, CA. To see this process in action, watch our YouTube video. Each refractor comes with a color Zygo interferometric test report taken at full aperture in our shop, documenting the accuracy of your completed objective. The Ohara glass melt is finished and approved, the design is finished and work is underway.

Coatings: Extreme broadband, full multi-coatings on each surface transmit more than 99.5% in the visual spectrum, as well as far above and below it. The reason to extend beyond the visual spectrum has to do with imaging. CCD and CMOS detectors in cameras record beyond the visual spectrum. Broadband, full multi-coatings eliminate unwanted reflections seen on CCD images taken through telescopes that have inferior coatings.

How to order: We are now taking $2000 deposits for this instrument. The balance is due when your telescope is finished and we are ready to ship. Placing an order on this page charges you the deposit and gets you on the waitlist. Your place in line is determined by the date and time at which you put down the deposit. If you cancel the order before your telescope is ready, we will credit your account and the funds can be used for other Stellarvue purchases.

Waiting Period: Please do not order this telescope if you are in a hurry as there may be unforeseen delays. We estimate deliveries for new orders will start in 2022 and continue through 2023. We have already received orders for well more than half of this limited run (50 telescopes). If it takes longer to perfect the optics, additional delays can happen. One thing is certain, the sooner you order, the sooner you will receive yours. The deposit places you on the waitlist based on the date you placed your order. The balance is due when your telescope is nearing completion and almost ready to ship.

Financing: Since this telescope is not immediately available it cannot be financed. However, when the telescope is ready to ship, financing for the balance can be arranged.

Light gathering and magnification power: A 180mm refractor gathers 661 more times the amount of light than the naked eye. Although Dawes limit states maximum magnification power for telescopes under good conditions is about 420 power for a telescope of this size, this high-Strehl APO refractor can exceed this power on steady nights. Check the Recommended Accessories section to make the best choice for eyepieces.

Two year warranty and Stellarvue Service: We are friends for life. Stellarvue telescopes and accessories are covered by a two-year warranty. But it does not stop there. Since we are a telescope maker, we can repair your telescope for a very nominal fee years after it goes out of warranty, should you accidentally drop it on concrete or otherwise damage it. Specifications:

Objective Lens:
180 mm clear aperture, 1,260mm focal length (F-7), apochromatic triplet using super low dispersion (SD) optical glass. This objective is precision figured in our optical shop to an accuracy of .99 Strehl or higher.

Tube Assembly:
Machined, fully baffled, aluminum tube painted instrument white outside, ultra-flat back inside.

Tube Assembly Weight:
Under 38 lbs with caps in place. 44.5 pounds with mounting rings and TP013A Losmandy-style rail.

Tube Dimensions:
The main tube is about 7.95" in diameter. The complete telescope is 54” long with dew shield extended and focuser all the way in. With the dew shield retracted the length is reduced to 44 1/4".

Dew shield:
About 9.1" diameter, fully retracting dew shield with threaded aluminum cap.

Focuser choices:

1. #FTF3545B-A 3 1/2" focuser with 4 1/2" of drawtube travel, two part rear adapter with M88.5 opening and M75 adapter, 2" and 1 1/4" compression ring adapters. Feather Touch 3.5" rack and pinion focuser with 2" and 1.25" compression ring adapters.

2. Moonlight Computerized NiteCrawler WR35 3.5" focuser with various extension tubes, adapters, 2" and 1.25" compression ring adapters. This is a $2704 upgrade.

Rings:
R180 CNC-machined mounting ring set with five 1/4"-20 threaded holes top and bottom. Holes are spaced 1.5” and 60mm apart respectively, with one in the center.

Case:
C180 hard case made with 3/8" plywood, with latches, side handles and wheels. The heavy duty case is 52" long, 15 3/4" wide and 15 3/4" high.

Optical Imaging Accessories:

sffr.72-reducer-flattener.jpg Field Flattener: To image with this telescope at 1260 mm f-7, use the new Stellarvue SFFX-2 photographic field flattener. This giant 4" diameter flattener will provide an enormous flat field with an image circle of about 90 mm! This massive flattener uses 100 mm diameter lenses and screws directly to the rear of the Feather Touch focuser (you will need an adapter to mount this flattener to the Moonlight focuser).

Reducer Flattener: To image at 945 mm f- 5.25, use the SFFR.72 photographic field flattener/reducer. It produces a larger than full frame (43 mm) field. We are currently developing an even larger reducer/flattener for big chip cameras.
