Price: The price for this hand-crafted refractor is only $1995 with the 2.5" Feather Touch focuser. We will ship the telescope in its C020, thickly padded, heavy duty travel case. You may notice on the deposit invoice it reads free shipping but refers only to the deposit, our discount UPS or Fed Ex rate will be charged to ship the telescope when finished.
How to order: This telescope is in continuous production. We are now taking $500 deposits for this instrument. The balance is due when your telescope is finished and we are ready to ship. Placing an order on this page charges you the deposit and gets you on the waitlist. Your place in line is determined by the date and time at which you put down the deposit.
Waiting Period: This telescope is an investment. Please do not order if you are in a hurry or you cannot tolerate unforeseen delays. Time is not of the essence, optical accuracy is. We estimate that an order placed now will be completed by the Fall. This our best guess estimate on when a telescope ordered now should be delivered. If it takes longer to perfect some optics or something else takes place, like a batch of bad glass, additional delays can happen. One thing is certain, the sooner you order, the sooner you will receive yours.
Financing: Since this telescope is not immediately available it cannot be financed. However, when the telescope is ready to ship, financing for the balance can be arranged.
Optics: The Stellarvue SVX080ST-25FT features an 80 mm f-6 (480 mm focal length) fully multi-coated, 3-element objective lens with an Ohara FPL-53 center element. The SVX series apochromatic telescopes use objectives that have the highest optical ratings as measured and documented on our Zygo Phase-Shifting Laser Interferometer. SVX series optics are rated at .98 - .996 Strehl with excellent optical correction of aberrations. To attain this level of optical accuracy Stellarvue opticians use specially-made tools to hand-figure objectives. While former models (without the X designation) all tested at .95 Strehl or higher, SVX series telescopes place 98 - 99% of the light precisely where it should be. Each SVX series refractor comes with a Zygo interferometric test report taken in our shop, documenting the accuracy of your individual objective.
Tube and Dew Shield: The standard model (SVX080ST-25FT) comes with an aluminum tube and dew shield that is finished in Instrument White. The aluminum tube of the SVX080ST is nearly the same weight as a composite carbon fiber tube. Aluminum is the best material for this particular telescope, as it cools down rapidly and allows for perfect alignment through precise CNC machining. The inside of the main tube assembly is painted "ultra flat black" and is baffled to eliminate tube wall reflections. Fittings are black anodized aluminum. The dew shield retracts, reducing the length of the telescope for storage. Extending the dew-shield minimizes dewing of the objective at night and serves as a glare shade during the daytime.
Feather Touch 2.5" Focuser and Imaging: The 2.5" focuser on this model is a heavy-duty rack and pinion unit designed to carry 13-15 pounds. It has an ultra-smooth (10:1 Ratio) fine focus control to attain perfect focus every time. An internal brake system allows the user to adjust capacity. The focuser fully rotates with a wide groove for smooth, precise rotation.
If interested in imaging, the SVX080T-3SV comes with risers, long rail, field flattener, and 3" SV focuser included in the purchase price. While it costs $400 more than the 25FT, it includes $428 in upgrades necessary for imaging.
Motorized Focuser Options
Aluminum hinged rings: The SVX080T comes with two-hinged, American-made, CNC-machined aluminum mounting rings. Each ring has five screws, top and bottom. Threaded holes are 1/4-20. There is one center hole, two holes spaced 1.5" apart, and two holes spaced 60 mm apart. Use the optional TP014 rail for telescope mounts with a Vixen style rail, or the optional TP006 for mounts with the larger Losmandy style rail.
Case: The SVX080T comes with a thickly-padded airline carry-on case (C020). Exterior dimensions: 22" x 9.5" x 7.5". Interior dimensions: 19.5" x 6" x 5"
- Star Diagonal: 2" Dielectric Star Diagonal (D1040Q)
- High power eyepiece for planets, double stars, and close views of the moon. We recommend either the EOP 04.9, the EUW 04.0, or the EOP 03.6. Select the one with the widest field of view you can afford.
- Medium power eyepiece for deep sky objects including galaxies, star clusters, and nebulas. We recommend the EUW 08.0 or the EOP 09.0. Select the one with the widest field of view you can afford.
- Low power, wide field eyepiece for larger extended objects, losing yourself in the star fields of the Milky Way, etc. We recommend one of two options:
- If using a go-to computerized telescope mount, the E7026R provides a wide 70-degree field of view, and also has a built-in crosshair reticle, which aids in centering the three stars when your telescope is set to operate in go-to mode. You can also purchase an illuminator for the eyepiece to make it easy to see the crosshairs. This is a popular eyepiece due being economical and having the crosshair reticle.
- Or, for better overall correction and the widest field of view, get the EOP 20.0.
- Mount and Tripod:
- Easy to use alt-azimuth mount - For use with a heavy duty camera tripod, such as Manfrotto 475.
- Computerized motor-driven equatorial mount and tripod - Portable and economical
- Finder Scope:
- Field flattener for Astrophotography: SFFX-1 universal field flattener. Don't forget to add this adapter.
Please note: Each camera (and even each t-ring) has different spacing. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to determine which spacers and/or adapters you might need for your specific camera, so please call us at (530) 823-7796 if you have any questions. We will assist you in getting the correct parts in order to attain the best images.

Flat field with field flattener: 43 mm
The fully illuminated Image Circle with 2.5" focuser is less than 43 mm since this telescope uses a 2.5" focuser. This can be compensated for by taking flats. If you want a true full-frame 80 mm, a 3" focuser is required. Our SVX080T-3SV is designed specifically for imaging and includes a 3" focuser.
131x (human eye = 1)
1.5 arc sec (Dawes Limit)
Light gathering and magnification power: An 80 mm refractor gathers 131 times more light than the naked eye. Although Dawes limit states maximum power for telescopes under good conditions is about 189 power for an 80 mm telescope, you can exceed this power on a steady night. This is a true apo triplet, capable of high power when conditions permit. See our list of recommended accessories below to make the best choice for eyepieces.

Since the SVX080T-R model isn’t available to be reviewed, but this has the same optic specs and performance as it does, so I thought I’d review it here. As usual. Stellarvue’s quality is top notch on their products. I’ve only had a very short few hours of clear nights since I received the scope recently. All I can say is. It is an instrument worthy of the name and the well known advertisements.
This refractor has it all: great optics, solidly built, and well designed. It is also light in weight, making it a great grab-n-go scope. It took me no time at all to start taking captures with my CCD camera of the galaxies and nebulae. This scope has an incredible field of view and the deep space objects were stunning looking both visually and with the camera. Features like the built-in dew shield and micro-focus knob makes this scope a pleasure to use. I do not think you need an optical finder scope for this refractor but using a reflex finder can be helpful. So far, I have also been very impressed with the customer service provided by Stellarvue. Overall, I could not have made a better choice.
I spent almost a year going back and forth over this scope and many others. I decided to finally pull the trigger. I couldn't be happier with my choice. Upon opening the well done packaging I found the scope just plain feels good. Everything works smooth, the fit and finish is spot on. After waiting 3 days for the clouds to lift, I was amazed by the views. I highly recommend that you don't wait as long as I did.
When I received my scope and opened the box I was very impressed by the level of quality and performance of my SV80ST. The scope was very solidly built and came with a threaded cap for the hood. The included case was good quality and fit everything I wanted to out in it and more. The performance also was spot on. Excellent value.
